14th July 2010: Tesco to create 750 jobs with seven new stores

Supermarket giant Tesco will create almost 750 jobs with the opening of seven new stores in Ireland, it announced today. Another outlet will be redeveloped under the €113m investment, the retailer said.

New stores will be opened in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath, with the creation of 80 jobs, in Oranmore, Co Galway with 110 jobs, in Swinford, Co Mayo with 90 posts, and in Ballybeg, Co Waterford, employing 110 staff. An outlet to be opened shortly in Thomas Street, central Dublin, will take on 16 staff, a store in Kimmage, Dublin, will employ 16 workers and Tesco will recruit for 266 positions at its new store in Naas, Co Kildare. The replacement of a store in Roscrea, Tipperary, will result in 60 additional new jobs, Tesco said.

Trade Minister Batt O’Keeffe said the investment would boost the economic recovery and prospects for growth. Tesco is already a major employer in this country with 13,400 workers and this investment will build confidence in the private sector – confidence to lend, confidence to spend, confidence to invest and confidence to hire,” he said.

“The new jobs will generate local economic activity across the regions, as well as driving competition in the retail sector and offering convenience and choice to consumers.”

Tesco said the new stores would open over the next year. The Express store in Dublin’s Thomas Street has already opened and will be officially launched shortly as the supermarket giant’s 120th outlet in Ireland.
